Stopped by here since I was in the area...and because the nearby halal cart that came highly recommended was "out of food". Being that it was well past my usual dinnertime, I was famished and cranky. Making matters worse was the fact that this place was completely packed on a Thursday night and it didn't look like the customers were in any rush to wrap up and allow me the chance to sit and eat my meal in peace. So, I placed an order for a lamb shawarma in home bread and a Turkish yogurt drink to go. As soon as I got home and unwrapped my sandwich, I was in awe of its size, how fresh it looked, and pleased that it stayed nice & hot despite the 15-minute ride home. Yes, I know I started out by saying I was famished but I also wanted to eat this in a comfortable setting, not on the sidewalk & while struggling to not make a disaster of my meal. First of all, there was plenty of lamb in the sandwich and it also had the proper amount of typical accompaniments. The lamb was sufficiently seasoned but wasn't greasy or overly salty. The home bread was just the perfect texture and thick/sturdy enough to hold everything together without itself being too bulky or unnecessarily bready. It also tasted pretty good and heightened the flavors of what it contained. Packaged with the shawarma were a little container of tatziki sauce and a couple of packets of Yi Pin hot sauce. That last detail threw me off a little bit but I figured since I didn't ask for it and they threw it in, there must be something to it. I tried the 1st few bites of the sandwich with the tatziki sauce before I caved and tried it with the hot sauce. I've gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised that it complimented the shawarma! Who knew? The yogurt drink was enjoyable as well. For those who have never tried it, it's thin in considtency and slightly salty and not sweet. It makes for a refreshing drink without weighing you down. I'm hoping to score a seat inside next time so I can order a platter or a variety of other items to try.

Very disappointed with this place ,The food was terrible and super expensive ,$6.50 for a small cup of soup?seriously??Top restaurants in NYC charges $4:50 for a real delicious ,uniq soup ...Place was super dirty and waiter was so rude..never going back there..

I started insulting the workers here in Turkish, and ended up getting beaten up and totally Mangal-ed. What to get: Greek Salad What else: Young hearts, be free tonight. Time is on your side. The service here is excellent. They were friendly on the phone even though I was calling shortly before closing, and they still made me a Gyro and Greek Salad even though it was about 3 minutes until they were supposed to be done for the night. I really appreciate that sort of service a lot. Unfortunately, the Gyro really didn't do anything for me. It was a bit like one of the Rochester Gyros, and I think in NYC I expect a higher standard than that. It just didn't have enough flavour or oomph for me. On the other hand, the Greek Salad that came with it was excellent, fresh, and a surprise since cheap Gyros don't usually come with Greek Salad (especially not at a Turkish place). So they get an extra star for the service and the salad, averaging them out to a 4 overall. If they were Mongolians, then of course it'd be Mongol Kabob but they're Turks, so it's not.

You're probably having the same thought about this place I did when I first heard the name. "Kebab and pizza? What the...?" But somehow, some way... it works. This little, unpretentious eatery is home to good food, friendly service, and reasonable prices. I came here on a weekday for a late lunch with a friend. It was pretty slow at 2:30pm, so we were seated immediately and our orders came quickly. We started with the calf's liver appetizer, which were small fried cubes of liver; I know it sounds weird and like something you'd see on Fear Factor, but it was very creamy and decadent in an organ-meat-type way. I had the gyro pide, a difficult-to-describe calzone-like creation with cheese and gyro meat wrapped up in dough. Whatever it was, it was delicious! And finally, my friend had a gyro dish, which was more akin to something you'd expect to find in a Turkish restaurant: gyro meat with a variety of veggies. Everything was cooked well and flavorful, which was a nice surprise for me (I typically find Turkish cuisine to be under-seasoned for my palate). If you're in the mood for some yummy grub that won't break the bank, go to Mangal.

I'm a sucker for mixed grill platters, and Mangal Kabob does not disappoint! It's not much to look at from the outside (or the inside for that matter), but once that kabob hits your lips, your skepticism will melt away in your mouth like a properly cooked lamb chop. I also love the hearty and authentic Iskembe (tripe soup). Apparently it helps with digestion! I definitely recommend not ordering any of the fried dishes (this includes falafel) if you're grabbing to go or ordering in. It'll be all soggy and mushy by the time you eat it, and that just ain't right.

My husband and I love Turkish food, so had to try this place out. It's a small place that offers pretty decent food. - Kabobs: Perfectly seasoned and grilled, not overcooked. - Condiments: Sauces, meh could have been better. - Ambience: a small hole in the wall so don't expect candle light dinner setting. - Service was good, so no complaints there. - Parking: don't have to break an arm and leg, pretty convenient. Overall, I would come back for the kabobs!

First of all, it's literally across the street from the 7 train. Plus 5 stars. Lol I kid, that's just my lazy side rating. But seriously though, RIGHT across. *happy dance* Food: deeee-leeee-sheee-us. We went in here after seeing pictures of the deliciously juicy looking kebabs and we were not one bit disappointed!! Plus, the food was out pretty fast and fresh. I had the mixed chicken and lamb Adana kebabs; both were exquisite! I did however like the lamb more as it was juicier and more flavorful. (Not that the chicken wasn't. I'm a lamb lover, so some bias may be present here). For appetizers, we had the small mixed appetizer which came with about 5/6 varieties and pita bread. If you plan on ordering the large appetizers, I think the small mixed appetizer is a good enough portion (for a table of 6). We also had the falafels which I recommend as well! The only cons for me were that the rice was a bit bland and the white sauce could've been better instead of just whipping up yogurt and cucumber together.... (Add some herbs and spices, Mangal!!) Decor: nothing fancy but clean and roomy nonetheless. (Bathroom was also clean!! +1) Waiter Service: nice and friendly waiter, was quite attentive and quick. I'll definitely be going back for more kebabs!!

I came here with friends and we all tried different versions of a Pide. The cheese Pide tasted okay, but was a bit dry for my taste. However, the Gyro Pide was absolutely on point! The lentil soup was also wonderful. The bread they brought with the soup was delicious. The type of bread you're okay filling yourself up on. Portions are decently sized and the staff is friendly and willing to explain the menu.

This is seriously some of the best Turkish I ever had. I stopped here on the way home and omg, the tripe soup was really really good. But what was even better was the pide. I love pizza and I love meat, and pide is an inspired combination of both. It was like a delicious boat filled with cheese and meat, you may never want to go back to regular pizza after eating it! Honestly places like this are just another reason to love Queens

Amazing!!! The mixed appetizer and home made bread alone are worth the trip!!! Highly recommended. Friendly and accommodating staff as well.

This place is really really good middle eastern food - specifically Turkish. You can tell by the regulars who seem to hang out. Yet the staff is always friendly to gringos like me. Also their delivery is timely and generous - sometimes overly generous with the bread. The beef and chicken cubes are awesome - perfectly seasoned and grilled. The falafel is spot on and the babaghanoush is next level good. I mean super good smokey baba you won't forget. I love the white bean salad and chopped salad is always fresh and refreshing. The only setback to this place is a somewhat bland hummus. It's a little oily and I bet some people like it that way, but I like my hummus to have a little more punch. Just skip it and get that amazing baba instead.

  • Beyshyh W.

food here is prepared fresh and perfectly seasoned. the pitas are hot, crispy and chewy at the same time! falafels were great too! the restaurant is not much to look at but the food makes up for it in spades. so many options, not enough mealtimes!

  • John R.

After pulling to the restaurant you are show tons of food options just from the outside. Once we walk in were asked to take a seat where we like, we went straight to the back of the seating. A waiter had greeted us and past out the menus and asked us what we would like to drink. Then processed by telling us that we can grab whatever we want from the soda fridge next to us. Looking at the menu I enjoyed that there are pictures for every single item listed. Some items had details, some had left out what you will find made in the dish. After combing over the menu I decided on getting the lentil soup and what I call the "Meat lovers" pizza. Pictures for the win! After receiving my soup to my surprise, I was presented with a pureed lentil soup. Sure it was pretty good and I had eaten the entire soup. But still wasn't what I thought I would be receiving. If it wasn't for their AMAZING bread (made in house) I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. Now about the pizza! The portions were very generous and should be eaten alone. Meaning, don't look to order anything else with it, you won't need it. The taste is there and once again, and the bread was amazing. The downfall of this pizza... That it was so greasy, it was soggy only after 5 minutes after I had gotten it. All in all, I would suggest this place to other people, but I wouldn't go out to try and make it back there.

Don't order from here unless you don't know your food. The yogurt chicken was terrible, it had Pasta Sauce on it and wet bread as a base. The lamb entree was overcooked and the hummus was watery. Seriously save yourself the trouble.

  • Perri O.

Incredibly authentic and tasty food (nearly identical to what I ate in Istanbul for 7 months a few years ago) and an authentic Turkish atmosphere--which is to say, it is often full of Turkish men and families watching football matches! The ezogelin soup (a Turkish staple made with lentils and bulgur) is an inexpensive and hearty standout, as is Mangal's homemade bread; never miss the chance to have it with your soup or your kebobs! The meat is always tender and full of flavor, the rice is fluffy and nutty, and the veggies and various sauces make all of the entrees a perfect symphony of deliciousness,

  • Gabrielius A.

Disappointing :/ borderline average kebob. Peta bread was so thin it rips just holding it. Yogurt was watered down... Waiting time was good tho. I'm sure other foods are ok, but chicken kebob on peta bread was complete fail to say the least

I ordered through seamless web. I ordered NO onions on the falafel sandwich and yet they gave me TONS of onions. I asked for extra tomatoes and they gave me very LITTLE bit of it. It ruined my appetite. Who does that??? Obviously someone can't follow a simple order. And that plate itself doesn't fill me up. What a waste of money and time. Skip it.

Their food was very tasty but not incredible when I came here last night. Although I thoroughly enjoyed their Mixed Appetizer (combo of their best cold appetizers and very tasty too!), everything else was a bit dry and over cooked and lacked that finest flavor to seal in the deal. Their Lamb Shish Kabab was way over cooked and a bit tough to chew. Their Chicken Adana Kabab was grilled perfectly but tasted a bit dry. As for the Kofte Kabab, it didn't taste all that fresh or flavorful as I would have liked and something about it tasted a bit off. As for their rice, it was very nicely done and I really enjoyed their grilled tomato, sweet peppers and very thinly sliced onions as garnish. However, their Falafel Plate was okay. It was overly fried and not very big in size so I felt like I was eating more of the falafel's fried crust then anything else. A huge turn off was the source of water. When I was heading to the restroom, I saw the waiter coming out of the bathroom with two pitchers in his hand. Well apparently, they seem to be the same pitchers used to serve us when we asked for water. Of course I don't think we all died from it, but the thought made it very unappetizing!

Good authentic food, and can't beat the price. One of my favorite Turkish places. Go fancy, go causal, everything goes here. Chicken kebab is always tender and flavorful. Lamb sheesh is cooked to perfection. Just enough flavor to really enjoy the meat, and cooked over grill just right. Always flavorful and never dry.

Love! Babaganoush! Lamb kebabs! Even the salads are delish! The place routinely runs out of lamb gyro meat- popular!

  • Kathy H.

Their bread is like crack. I am in post-carb slumberous heaven. It comes with this garlicky-vinegary sauce that is amazing. The kebabs are well seasoned and grilled right-not overdone and still tender on the inside. I also got the tripe soup which was great until I had everything else I ordered and then I realized it was just okay in comparison. Will definitely go back.

first of all, I am a big fan of this place. it's authentic, so fast, and the right price. I order via grubhub all the time! but unfortunately last night my bf and I received hummus that looked as usual but tasted like CLEANING PRODUCT. maybe it was accidentally poured/knocked over, maybe it was made on something wet with product. but, of course, it doesn't matter why. I even called them so they could dump it asap. the person said to hold on, tasted it (I assume) and said its just too much lemon. he kindly offered to send us a new one, but we declined because it was not overly-lemoned by any stretch of the imagination. it was vehemently poisonous. I think they just claimed it was overly lemoned to cover themselves in case it sent us to the emergency room and for overall corporate liability

+ Shishkabob meat, rice, lettuce, and onions were fresh and tasted delightful. + Bread comes with meal, but no dipping sauce or olive oil or hummus. - Portions for 'small' are TOO small. No I didn't order a kid's meal. - Prices are too high for a small pl

I was in Sunnyside yesterday checking out apartments, and I stopped here for lunch--SO good. As far as Turkish food goes, this was delicious. We split the shepherd's and eggplant salads, and then a large order of the chicken adana kabob. Shepherd' s salads are always good, so nothing to see here. The eggplant salad, though, when coupled with the homemade bread, was absolutely delicious. Chicken was cooked perfectly--moist on the inside, slightly charred on the outside. Seasoned perfectly with spices. Will absolutely be back here once I complete my move!

so we ordered the "fulll" dinner plates ($14.xx) each vs the small for delivery. The doner chicken and doner lamb kabob was tasteless The shish kabob chicken and lamb were both in chunks. They were not the long ground kabob we expected. We paid for extra salad on one of the dishes, and both were IDENTICAL. never got it. paid of extra sauce which was watery.

Redeemed a bit. They returned to portion size to what it was, although they forgot part of my order, but not a big deal cause 90% of the order came really fast. Probably best to go there. Seamless sometimes could be lame.

  • Ayesha S.

I love this place!! It might look like a hole in the wall but the food is delicious!! For all their main dishes they offer 2 sizes, there is a small size for people who aren't starving but still want a mouthgasm for a cheaper price than the bigger portion. I believe the smaller portion starts at around 9 and the bigger portion goes up to $15. I always order the chicken Adana kabab, it is moist, flavorful and perfect, it comes with rice which is really yummy as well. The only reason I am giving it a 4 star out of 5 is because of the pricing. It is a bit pricey when compared to Queens standards, but the taste of the food is worth the price. Be warned, this places gets packed very quickly!

Amazing gyros. The home bread is delicious and always fresh. One warning though-don't get their hummus (I could not eat it). Everything else is amazing.

In an area with ethnic food abound - Mangal Kabob offers up good quality Middle Eastern fare at decent prices. I picked up 2 lahmachun , thin personal-sized pizza like things topped with lamb and sauce for $6. You're supposed to take each lahmachun, fill it with some of the lettuce, tomatoes and onions, roll up it and devour it. DIY food, my favorite - what's better than playing with your food?! The lamachun had a crisp crust and were actually quite filling. But while it was good, it's exactly what you would think it tastes like. I'll need to come back to try the turkish bread that everyone is raving about.

I just popped in for a quick order of hummus ($4). It was quite a hefty serving -- much better value than the prepackaged stuff you'd get at the store! The taste was pretty plain, but that's probably just because my palate was recovering from having tasted Beyoglu's miraculous hummus the previous day. I was pleasantly surprised to find when I got home that my order came with a couple pieces of still-warm pita bread. Mmm! I'll be back eventually for some real food.

  • Ch M.

Customer Service is horrible. I ordered delivery. I got an extra side and it was forgotten. OK, fine, mistakes happen. So I call the restaurant, and the guy answering the phone insists that I'm wrong and I'm lying claiming to be "looking at the other paper that very moment". Well, so was I and I clearly ordered an extra side and got charged for it and didn't receive it. Eventually, when I wouldn't budge, he "suddenly" was able to see that I was right and I DID order the extra side after all. He told me he would refund my total. Lo and behold, checked my credit card statement today, and I was charged for that side that I never got. First they claim I'm lying and that my order sheet was wrong, then they promise to refund the side I didn't receive, then it turns out they were just talking out of their butts and never planning on refunding me or giving me my side. Ridiculous. Never again.

Edible, but not good. Decent delivery speed, around 45 minutes. The lamb gyro was seasoned well but very greasy, with limp lettuce and no tomatoes. The lamb pizza was pretty bad, limp and soggy crust and the meat had a weird flavor. The shepherd salad didn't seem very fresh but it was ok. The baklava had a nice texture but not much flavor at all. Disappointing, as I really love Turkish food.

Great Turkish food. The dining area has a very home feeling with the soft background music and pictures of Turkish people on the walls. I ordered the Cheese Pide which was good. The food portions are fair for the price. Food comes out fairly quick and it's easy access from the 7 train. Parking a car my be a bit harder because it is located on queens blvd. Overall the place is good and I'm rating as that. I may not go out my way to come here but if I'm on the 7 train I may just stop by to grab a quick bite.

After a bad lahmajun experience, I wanted to show my boyfriend a better experience with Middle Eastern food. We found Mangal, saw they had lahmajun and decided to give it a try. We split a cheese pide, two lahmajun, a sigara borek, a Turkish coffee, and a a shish kebab (beef). The cheese pide was pretty good, it reminded me of a pizza without sauce. Next time I'll try the sujuk pide instead. The lahmajun made me so happy. They used ground lamb which really flavored the whole dish without overpowering the other ingredients. Really good! The sigara borek had a really nice salty cheese, and dill as well. A better version of mozarella sticks if you can believe it! I loved the Turkish coffee, as it reminded me of my days in college with my Arabic tutor. Spot on! As for the shish kebab, I would recommend ordering their homestyle bread as it's really good at sopping up the juices. The shish kebab was grilled perfectly, not dry, and had incredible flavor! One of my favorites, they grill meat right! Overall, it was a great first time experience, we will be back!

First-timer here. I came here with 2 friends. this isn't there first time eating at Mangal. We shared the mixed cold app plate. Wow, 5 diff foods items each separated by a wedge of ripe tomato: hummus, babaganoush, bean salad, cucumber salad, and tabouleh salad. For entree, I couldn't decide what meat to eat. I ordered lamb gyro over rice pilaf. Dipping each slice of lamb gyro into the cucumber dressing gave it an extra umph. And that rice pilaf, I LOVE the flavor and how light it is (in my stomach). I could totally skip the meats and just order that mixed cold app plate AS my main entree. YUM.

I was so glad when my Uber car driver confirmed my feelings that this is the best and most authentic Turkish food in the neighborhood. (He should know, he is Turkish!) Aside from delicious food (please get the eggplant salad), this place has an awesome vibe. At any time, you'll find a group of super nice people in their no-frills dining room. Twice now, as I've waited for takeout food, people have invited me to sit at their table in the otherwise full room while I did so.

I love their shish kabob sandwiches, baba ghanoush (served with lots of sesame-studded bread), and the ground meat pide. (If choosing between lahmacun and the boat-shaped pide, I prefer the latter). Unfortunately, I like these items so much that I haven't tried most of the other menu selections. I did enjoy a slice of delicious pistachio baklava here, though! This place is solid in preparation and delivery - I'm always happy! Plus I can get a sandwich or salad for less than $10.

I've come two or three times and ordered the sucuk pide (pronounced something like "soo-jook pee-duh"), and I can heartily recommend it. It's kinda like sausage pizza but way better. I only tried it because when I lived in Sunnyside I had a couple of Turkish roommates who both recommended Mangal and sucuk pide specifically. It looks like they have some nice salads there too, though I haven't actually eaten any of them. I did have a confusing experience once trying to order over the phone, so I think it's probably easiest to come and order in person.

Yes, the food can be a bit dry at times, but they have amazing BREAD that comes with your order. This bread is my weakness when I am trying to avoid carbs! I usually get their babaganush, chicken kabob, and falafels. I am not a huge fan of their falafels because there were a few times they were dry. Their babaganush though, is amazing! I will order that consistently. They also have a nice variety of salads that I still need to try.... Their prices are fair, and I really like ordering a bunch of things when I have friends over. Pair it with a bottle of red wine. Might sound weird to you, but sounds amazing to me. Highly recommend. P.S. They give out those Yi Pin hot sauces that Chinese restaurants usually include in delivery orders. I'm not sure what to say about that, but it's kind of strange.

Hells to the yes! It's nice to have some good casual Turkish in Sunnyside. I love Turkish grill but it's a nice place to go for a sit down dinner with a bottle of wine. If you want excellent grilled turkish meat sandwiches on homemade bread with large portions for $7, Mangal is the place. I havent tried the pide yet but I will be back for sure.

Food was awful !! Chicken had absolutely no taste, rice was BLAH and there is absolutely no favor to the food. I was super disappointed because most of the reviews here does sound good. Don't waste your meter parking $$ and time, not worth it at all.

Another great find in the wonderful Sunnyside. This is a great Turkish restaurant. There aren't that many tables for seating and they are pretty busy on weeknights. Everything is extremely fresh and tasty with reasonable prices. Kitchen staff is pretty busy. You should call ahead if you're picking up since it can be a wait. They have really fresh bread that comes in a good portion size. I have yet to taste their sandwiches and desserts but will definitely be back soon.

Really good place! I do not live in the neighborhood but come by to do some grocery shopping at a local Mediterranean store and always stop by there. Their tripe soup is delicious but my only complaint is that it is too small.

  • Darwin G.

Cheap and some of the best Turkish I've had in New York. The lentil soup is much better than American versions I've had, which is usually a boring brown color with little flavor. This was a vibrant color and loaded with mint to give another dimension to the lentils. The baba ganoush was zesty and fresh, which came along with out of the oven soft sesame bread. I really suggest their incredible lahmachun or "Turkish pizza." This version has a really light thin crust. It's covered with minced meat and comes with tomato and lettuce to wrap it all up. I highly suggest it. Extremely cheap too at $6 for two pieces (minimum order is 2). Finally, the pide was decent. My friend got one with a really flavorful sausage and cheese. In the end, it tasted a lot like a pepperoni or chicken roll from an Italian spot, so that wasn't exciting for me.

This place is as good as it gets. We used to live in Sunnyside, but have moved to Brooklyn, and still cannot find Turkish food this good anywhere. There are a couple more pricey Turkish places in Sunnyside, but the food at Mangal is so much better. I've only ever done takeout and eat-in, no delivery, so I can't comment on that. But service is always polite and friendly (wonderful Turkish hospitality) and servings are generous (especially the delicious bread). I'm a vegetarian and my partner loves meat, so this is a great place for that, too. What else can I say but: please open a branch in Brooklyn!

I've always loved Gyros because of the taste, meatiness, flavor from the complimented garnishes and the variation in which people pronounce it. So is it with a J in the American tone or with a H in the Mediterranean tone, maybe it's with a Y. I'm not a big fan of stereotypes unless it's on the good side: you can get variations anywhere, but Astoria is known for a good handful of them, each one has their small differences. I have always been accustomed to the Greek variation, because that's been what's around. The ones that probably come from the Kronos brand cones, nothing wrong with them but it doesn't compare well to real meat, some Greek spots do serve non-Kronos and more meat slab cones. The Kronos variation tastes like the deli version of Gyro meat... meaning ground down meat with spices added and molded back into a cone shape where they toast it back up and then slice it, yum sounding. It also sounds sarcastic but it's true, yum. How different is the Turkish: Mangal Kabob version? MEATIER! Carnivores would more appreciate the meatiness of an actual whole turkey roasted like at Thanksgiving (real meat) rather than deli turkey (ground down meat with additives). Is the Mangal Kabob cone still grounded down and rebuilt or is it real slabs of meat? I don't know, but it is meatier tasting, like from a whole turkey, I mean lamb/beef slabs. I've started to notice around there have been more Gyro vendors around serving slabs of actual meat and not grounded down deli-like Kronos around. In terms of the flavor of the meat: it's light but the toasted part definitely has more flavor. You're going to have to eat or scrape off the lettuce, tomatoes and onions to get to the meat. If you request them to add everything, you will get lettuce, tomatoes, onions with hot sauce and a bit of Tzatziki sauce, the Tzatziki sauce is not thick, I think it's too much on the liquidity side. Gum, breath mint or even cologne/perfume after would be helpful because it leaves an after hint of meat and onions in your mouth and around you, awesome! -You can get the meat in a rice dish, in a pita or their home bread. I have been hear many many times over the years and have tried each version. Atop good rice and other ingredients. Their pita is thin and soft, slightly toasted on top, it's not folded like the usual way but it's inside a pocket, less messy. Their home bread seems fresh baked that morning and has a toasty top (sprinkled with light sesame). The home bread is soft, airy, crisp. -The Baklava is crisp and sweet. The pistachio filling is on the light pistachio flavored side, crumbly in smoothness. -There menu includes Italian style pizza and a Turkish style pizza. The menu includes fish, kabobs, falafel, humus and a range of treats. You can view their menu or order online for free delivery at GrubHub: grubhub.com/nyc/mangal-k… When I dine in, the owner is usually busy. But when he's not he does greet, slightly on the friendly side, once he saved me from a parking ticket. When I was taking a photo, one of the host came out and asked me, was I from a Newspaper (this place has had media attention, like from Fox 5, in which they use and ride on it, smart), I said no, just taking a picture for Yelp, he said "what is that?" I explained it to him and left me alone, he then told the server to take my order. I love old world "charm".

Great Kabab sandwiches. This place reminds of the Kabab place in the LES. They cook everything fresh so there is a bit of a wait. Other things of note is the hot sauce that had great flavor and supper spicy. Also the homemade tzatziki sauce was very yummy.

If i could, I'd give it a -3 star review! Called them at 3:52 on Sun 12/30/12 and the first thing i did was give them my address bc they had my previous address. They send the delivery guy to the old address, and told me they'd give him the correct address. After a while the delivery guy tell me he's still in the old address, and doesn't understand English. After informing me he speaks Spanish, i tell him my address in SPANISH. I call Mangal back to ask him if they gave him the correct address, and they said they did but I WAS NOT coming out! Not only did they lie to me about giving the delivery guy the correct address, they also blamed ME for not receiving it. I promptly cancelled the order at 4:52. The delivery guy then comes! I tell them I'm not paying for it since it has been an hour, and it was cold, to which they told me "sometimes this happens" and that I will be paying for it! After arguing that this shouldn't have happened bc I took precautions from the beginning when informed them of my new address, even then had to inform the delivery guy in Spanish when he went to my old address, and then was blamed for not coming out to pick it up from my old address when I wasn't even there, We finally agreed to have the food sent back and that I wouldn't be charged for it. I am now awaiting to see if any charges have been made through this regrettable experience. Thus my review of -3 stars, heart-achingly unprofessional and disappointing customer service.

Service and price is very good. The food is great too and very authentic. Their hummus is delicious as well. It seems that many people get orders for take out or delivery in the neighborhood. I never had the pizza and would love to try that the next time but I do know that the kabobs are top notch. The dining area is very clean as well and have no problem sitting here and enjoying a really good meal. I will be back because their menu has plenty of delicious looking items on it that I'll have to try

This turkish food was one of the best i've had in a while. I ordered the small shish kebab entree and i finished it all. The place doesn't look all that fancy but the prices here are pretty reasonable. My friends and I ordered the hummus as an appetizer and I was a little skeptical at first because I'm not a big fan of hummus but once i tasted their hummus with the warm bread, I was in love. If any one is looking for a decent price turkish restaurant this is your go to place. I suggest people who ends up wasting half of their food to order the small plate because the small is big enough to fill you up, oh and don't forget to try their orange soda.

What do I want to eat tonight? When this question strikes me and I don't feel like cooking Mengal is my no-brainer-tasty choice. Budget friendly. Either a set of 2 Lahmachuns, Ezogelin Corbasi (lentil soup), Cacik (yogurt based cold apetizer) or Adana Kebab top my choices, always cooked per order. When ordering to-go you may sip on a Turkish tea while you wait? I also enjoy taking visiting friends and family there. You can speak to each other, and are never rushed by attentive staff.

Delicious! Fresh! Inexpensive! I've not been disappointed by their salads or meats. The service is a little slow and the place is too warm in the summer.

Great lamb pizza- dip appetizer is a great value but you gotta like parsley. Falafel is tasty and light and all of the meats are grilled to perfection. Eat here and never hit a gyro stand at 4am again!

While not one of the better kabob places in Sunnyside, its still solid food and the staff is quite nice. Very authentic.

This is a little piece of Turkish food heaven. The food is very straight forward Turkish fare with a great price. You are not going to come here for a romantic show off experiences . I took my husband here for the first time and he loved itdespite the fact that he does not eat meat. this place has food for vegetarians to enjoy as well. We went during ramadan this year and they were playing the holiday shows from turkey on the tv . I practically ordered the whole menu . If they would have had the snapper available the hubby would have gotten that too. I got the cacik which does not have the pink caviar that i like from other turkish joints but it was really great with their fresh homemade bread, then some lentil soup, don't forget the hummus. Hubby got a couple of slices and I got the chicken kabob and adana dinner. This place is great if you don't want to cook. The prices are affordable for a good solid menu.

Very fresh, authentic seeming Turkish food at OK prices (well I have never been to Turkey so my impression of "authentic" is based on what I have tried elsewhere.). Many Turkish customers. Ordered lamb doner kabob plate , huge amount of lamb was served for $12 with tomatoes, onions, lettuce, generous amount of rice and bread, the bread was great. the appetizer consisting of rolls of dough filled with feta and parsley is awesome! great Turkish coffee (are ya surprized?) Seating is a bit crowded together, the place seems to be popular and could use a bit more room, but in NY this is life. I came by myself and there was a bit of a wait for them to seat me and then there seemed to be some confusion about who was supposed to take my order, but once I got over that delay my experience was good. they deliver. They have some wonderful looking appetizers on display in a glass cabinet. I will be back!!

I live across the street from this place and I order food from them sometimes over the phone. The food is very good however, I think they do not understand English very well and their communication skills and knowledge about customer service is off. They can hang up the phone on you, and sometimes would send the wrong order to you and when you confront them, they do not even apologize. Even after repeating many times some specifics about the order, they still get it wrong. It's a shame because they do have good food but served by idiots !!!

Kebab heaven... chicken and lamb kebab heaven.... and crazy good rice... Ramadan I have been trying to eat at home... but the other day when I was stuck in sunnyside and would not be making it home anytime soon I decided on Mangal kabob... they are definitely Turkish... and they definitely know their meat... Nothing fancy at all about this place.. everybody is speaking Turkish and most of the tables were occupied on a Friday early evening... One thing I noticed is that when you are fasting and it is getting close to iftar everything looks good and leave it to my indecisiveness it would take me forever... the nice older man just let me take my sweet little time as I sat there trying to decide between Adnan, Gyro, or kebab... I decided I always love my kebab so i decided on the chicken and lamb kebabs which come with rice and lettuce and tomato... and i also ordered the stuffed grape leaves.... So the wait wasn't too bad when I finally got home I first tried the grape leaves.. they were ok.. i honestly have had a lot better and was worried that I was going to be disappointed with the rest of my food... but luckily the rest was just as good as it gets... I am in love with their rice! And I am not a big rice female but damn do they make it really good.. the meat was not dry, was tender and juicy and A LOT! the full meal cost only 14 which is nothing!!! One thing i was a little sad about they don't have a homemade hot sauce like other Turkish spots I have been too... in fact they use a packet *GASP* so not right... SMH people SMH!!! Their "white" sauce is decent I have had better but it's ok... the Rice and kebab really just kinda made up for the rest of the minor set backs... I'm not in Sunnyside a lot but if I am there again it's def on my must have meat and rice list!

When I win the $640 Mega Million Lottery Jackpot - the first thing I'm going to do (right after I commission a bronzed statue of Candy Finnigan from Intervention) is to buy a vat of their humus large enough to bathe in. I want to literally bathe in their humus. My one complaint is that their bread to humus ratio is never quite right - but I don't care. I would eat it with my bare hands if I have to*. *I have eaten their humus with my bare hands before.

I came here w a friend & Turkish co worker who asked if we were picky eaters and would we allow him to order for us. "of course" we said. He asked if i wanted lamb & chicken combo, "sure" I said. A little bit later a nice platter of rice & salad with this warm, juicy lamb & chicken over it comes out. I didn't know where to start. Plus a basket of this amazing, warm, homemade bread. A little container of chili paste & a tzaziki style sauce. The 3 of us inhaled our food in silence as if we were paying respect to this amazing food. Then our Turkish leader goes to the counter & comes back with 3 dishes of what appear to be a type of flan, it was so good and custardy with a vanilla flavor. If we weren't full enough the waiter brings a dish with these flaky little pastries, they appeared to have honey and pistachios between the flaky layers, He says "eat these, they'll give you energy!" "LIAR!" We were stuffed & needed a nap. This place is def worth trying, & take the lamb over the chicken, IMHO! ENJOY

I've only had food from here once, but it was pretty good. Decent portions and decent price. Me and my bro had to wait a bit since we were getting it picked up, but other than that everything else was fine. I thought it was really nice of them to give us extra stuff for free, one, because it was our first time there (I'm assuming that's why) and two, they gave us a HUGE bag of bread and two containers of their chocolate rice pudding or whatever dessert it was. I liked that. They won me over with that big ol' sweet tooth of mine. But anyways, I'd like to try this place again, it's always nice to have some good halal food nearby.

I must say, I love their home made bread. Specially when you dine-in so that it's so fresh n warm. Their red lentil soup is a time machine for me, as I go back to my childhood memories of my gramma's soup. So good. Falafel tastes as good as purchased from local joint in downtown Cairo or tel aviv. Their Adana is awesome too. A lunch will set you back about $8 so it's very fairly priced.

Great food, BUT only gets 2 stars because the guy that answers the phone has no sense of customer service and just can't understand simple english. Don't get me wrong, i totally understand he has issues with his english, but he always gets my order wrong. I usually ask by number instead of using the usual menu. so i would say something like i want a number 12, and he is like "what", then if he can't understand you, he puts you on hold for 5 minutes while he answer his other calls. I have seen him do this in person many times. Overall, is good food. just don't order by phone unless you speak their language.

I took my family to Mangal on Saturday night and we had an excellent dining experience. Everything we had was yummy and super fresh. The service was even great I like that the portions were ample but the prices were still reasonable. I look forward to going back. Try the mixed plate appetizer and the tilapia. Very nice.

If you want to get a feel for authentic Turkish food come on down to Mangal Kabob & Pizza Restaurant. You don't have to cook just come here. You feel like you are in Turkey. They have a plasma TV with an assortment of channels you can watch from Turkey. You hear them speaking Turkish. Coming here, I enjoy the coziness of the Turks. Folks don't expect red carpet service when you go to a takeout restaurant type of place. Just be patient. Food is a social thing for Turkish people. They have a lot of pride in what they do and they believe in taking there time and enjoying each others conversations and people gazing. People need to get use to the way other groups of people interact. It's part of life. When it comes to food the Turks are really great at that:) At Mangal, they really make the best Lahmajun. It only costs $3.00 for 2 large pieces of meat pies. They are made fresh and when you get them they are so crispy. You fill the Lahmajun with the onions, lettuce, tomato and roll it up and bite into the crispiness. They also have other authentic dishes and the portions are filling you can even share and entree and supplement an appetizer if you are a portioned eater, like I am. If you are a big eater order what you please. So go out and try Mangal you won't be disappointed. It's a tasty experience it will leave you wanting more! I plan to go back again.

this is how authentic turkish joint somehwere in Izmir looks like. Tv w/ turkish soap operas, bulky tables and chairs (sooo diner style),some plants and mustachy turks piercing u w/ their glances, turkish moms w their kids. Ah Ambiance!!! it add so much spice to my daily meal ;) Food is good. Especially for the price u pay. Must try-lahmajun, tripe soup, pides (turkish pizzas w topppings), kazandibi (milk custurd type of a dessert). Kebabs are so -so, but some times hit the right spot too. People are generally nice-as nice turkish chefs can actually be. hardworking and honest in my opinion. Im happy to spend my money here.

Sorry to hear that delivery service was so bad for Simone f. I did notice at the beginning of May they were training a new guy behind the counter is he almost mess up my order. But... the kabob and falafel are also fresh and cook right in front of me. Good quality Turkish style food for a good price. My family have tried everything on the menu. I always had take-out always been happy with the friendly service.

I really wanted to like this place given all the great reviews. It was my first take-out experience in the Sunnyside area, and it was kinda terrible. I ordered via Seamless, and it took almost two hours for me to receive my meal. I called twice and they kept telling me it was on its way. By the time I got it, my stomach had already eaten itself and I was no longer hungry ... The entree itself was nothing to write home about. The chicken had a weird taste to it and the whole platter just tasted like raw onions. The hummus and bread, on the other hand, AH-MAH-ZING.

Good Donar Kebabs at reasonable prices! Yumm.... I went here to find my boyfriend his favorite kebabs until he returned from a trip the next day. So they packed it up for my refrigerator with extra care. They are a great place for kebabs and have great service!

The best turkish food in sunnyside and possibly all of ny. When we were carnivores, this was the place to satisfy our kebab cravings. Now that we are vegans, this IS the place to satisfy our cravings for authentic real turkish delights. They make the best babaganoush! Ever! We compare their babaganoush to other turkish restaurants in queens, nyc, li. They all fail in comparison. Their hummus, salads, and home-made turkish bread. So good! None of that store -bought dry pita, which many turkish places, sadly, insist on serving. The place Is easy to find. Just look for a line of taxis and limousines parked outside. These drivers know authentic food. The place is always busy, especially the take-out section. Try their good turkish food and you will know why. We only wish they would open in other place lacking good food ie forest hills. Parking in sunnyside can be challenging at best. But for the food this good, we make special trips as often as we can.

I have come to a conclusion. After much soul searching and glue sniffing, I have concluded that after three big bites of Mangal's Shish Kabob sandwich with home bread, I can have a standing orgasm. I kid you not. I'm not F***ing around here people. I came buckets, serious. Who needs whiny girlfriends and nagging wives when you've got Mangal's Shish Kabob Sandwich with home bread tightly grasped onto your manly hands. The tender meats between my teeth, creamy tangy hummus on my tongue and cool tart yogurt sauce on my lips is all I need for an explosive happy ending. p.s. Don't get the chicken. It is as dry as your sense of humor.

Any time/place I can practice my Turkish is fantastic. I don't venture to Queens to eat too often, but was meeting friends and, after spotting this place, convinced them to go eat at Mangal's. After coming here, I think I'll have to come to Queens more often. 1) The food is cheap - way cheaper than any of my favorite Turkish places in Manhattan. 2) The food is top-notch and very authentic. Brought me right back to my favorite restaurants while living in Turkey. 3) They...have...AYRAN!!! (salty yogurt drink that is incredibly hard to find in the States...and is so delicious) 4) The head boss guy is so sweet. Speak a little Turkce and you'll get a better seat at a better table ;) 5) $32 for 3 of us to completely stuff our faces with food and drink. Deal to die for.

Damn good Turkish kebabs and donner/shawarma (depending on if you're going to take the Turkish or Arab viewpoint) to be devoured here. Go with the 'home bread'-it is tasty, chewy, holds up well to reheating, and doesn't puncture during transportation. Adana kebab tasty, well seasoned, and nicely grilled, as are the donner, which are very delectable. For reheating I would advise a light spray of non-stick spray on the aluminum foil so the sandwich doesn't stick. Reasonable prices-$7 for a sandwich may seem a bit excessive but this is worth two eatings.

I anticipated going to this place for a while being it's just a neighborhood away from where I live and based on them serving their falafel on their own homebread, but they managed to exceed those expectations. First of all, MASSIVE sandwich. The bread is beautiful, fresh, delicious, soft, oh my god. The toppings: there were a lot, and there had to be with the size of the sandwich. The white sauce kept everything as moist as it should have been. The falafel was as good as it gets. Now what really took it over the edge for me was the onions in the sandwich. I don't think I've seen too many falafel sandwiches with onions in the mix, but if I have they haven't done a good job standing out. They complemented the home-made bread and falafel amazingly. I will definitely be back to this place. Many times. In fact maybe I'll go tomorrow. I'll probably get a second sandwich later for when I get home and wish I had another falafel sandwich from this place. Yeah that sounds perfect.

I don't know what all the hype is about. My friend and I went here today after a 25 minute subway ride. I got the Shish Kabab sandwich on home bread, and she got the Chicken Adana sandwich on home bread. We also go the cacik (yogurt with chopped cucumbers, mint and garlic) which came with bread. The cacik with bread was a good start to the meal. The bread was fresh and tasty (I supposed this was the home bread as well). However, it went downhill from there. Both of sandwiches were okay, nothing special. In fact, there were some issues. The Shish Kabab was very chewy and a bit dry. The chicken was sort of bland. Actually, both sandwiches were bland; they lacked proper seasoning and definitely needed a kick. The portions were big, but they were just okay. The bigger problem was the service, or lack thereof. One of the waiters was too busy watching soccer on the flat screen TV to pay attention to us (see the pictures section). We needed hot sauce, and called to him 5 times. Yes, 5 times. He even met our eyes a few times, but chose to ignore us and gave us his back. At one point, he walked right past us to greet the new customers who had walked in through the door. Tsk, tsk, Mangal. Customer service is important! Another waiter, who had seen our frustration, tended to us and gave us the hot sauce. However, he seemed a bit aggravated at the end when we each asked for change for $20. Furthermore, when he came back, he took the liberty of giving us back $5 each while taking $30. "No more change" were his words. Thanks, Mangal, for deciding how much tip we should give. To sum up, this place is definitely not worth the money, nor the travel. Go someplace else-you'll have no trouble finding a better place in NYC. After all, it is the greatest city in the world.

I only had the felafel sandwich with home bread and it was pretty good. Its a huge portion and the bread is fresh baked. The kebabs look like the way to go. This place reminded me of the Turkish Doner places in Berlin. This means the pita stuffing is just lettuce, tomato, onion and sauce and not the middle east style falafel which emphasize the salads and pickles. I wouldnt say its worth traveling for, but if you find yourself in the area its a great for a cheap bite right off the 7 train.

  • Jessica P.

Merhaba! As I sit here typing this review, I am waiting for my Turkish boyfriend to come home so we can pick up some Doner! I recommend the lamb doner, and of course it must be on the Turkish pita bread. The baklava is pretty good, but nothing to rave about. Unfortunately, I have also had the pizza. Yuck. Why do they sell pizza? Not to be confused with "Turkish pizza" which is the lamachun. On the picture menu, it looks like a flat toasted pita with this spread over it. TRUST me, it's good. PS prices are nice and cheap, too!

All around this modest looking take out/eat in Turkish and pizza restaurant truly surprised. It felt homey once inside, and the service was very pleasant. The babaganoush had a unique smokey flavor I could not get enough of. I was dipping their house bread in it, which was probably the only item I found lacking. It was warm and toasty but just pizza dough. At first I was starting to think the wait for the main course was too long, but when I received the Salmon Kabob special I understood. It was obviously prepared with great care, it was maybe the best salmon I've eaten in a restaurant. I found it incredibly moist and tender with an amazing citrus flavor from the citrus salad it was served over. I hope the salmon kabob is the special every day, because I will be back for it.

I love this place. The guys behind the counter always cause me to laugh and they are not trying to be funny. Everything I ever ordered was fantastic. They answer all my off the wall questions too cause I don't know what some of the stuff they are serving is. Now I am hungry.

I love this place! I work at the school a block away, and this is my go to place for soup and all things Turkish. The falafel is great. The lentil soup is my absolute favorite. For $4 you get a nice container of freshly made soup and four hugh slices of their freshly made bread. You really can't go wrong!

I went here last August and was very impressed with their doner kebab. Unlike any of the others I'd had in New York, it was made with whole cuts of lamb or beef layered on the spit. (I think it was lamb, but it could have been a combination of the two.) The home bread, which is an extra $1 or something over the pita pocket, was also fresh and really good. The only drawback was the yogurt sauce, which i thought was a little bland--especially compared to Kebab Garden or Yatagan--and too filled with chunky cucumber, but even so, it was by far the best and most authentic doner kebab I'd had in the US so far. I came back to the city this month and was really looking forward to going back. Sadly, though, the kebab is nothing like what it used to be. They've switched to ground meat, just like everywhere else in New York; and though the sauce has actually improved a lot, it's no better than at those two places I mentioned before. All things considered I'd place the current Mangal above Yatagan, and in a close tie with Kebab Garden, because they both offer home bread in addition to the pita pocket. If you live anywhere nearby, this is still a solid and relatively cheap place to get a kebab. But if you live closer to Yatagan, Kebab Garden, or Bereket, I wouldn't recommend going out of your way anymore.

I work right across the street from Mangal Kabob and I end up eating there about once a week. I usually go with the lamb gyro plate: it's fast, it's cheap, and ruthlessly delicious. The home bread that comes with the meals is enough to keep me coming back. To be sure, the staff doesn't exactly exude charm and kindness, but I've never had an unpleasant experience during any of my visits. With the recent addition of the dining area, eating in the restaurant is now much more enjoyable. Overall, this is one of my favorite quick, cheap eateries in Queens.

What a nice surprise! This place is way better than I expected. Tasty lamb, super soft rice pilaf, amazing pureed lentil soup with lemon, and baklava worth unbuttoning your pants for (no, not in a weird way). Pretty inexpensive for insane portions.

Thought the falafels would have been better. They put them on Turkish bread, but its not that good. Also the falafels are kind of mushy. Also the wait here can be long.

I am so disappointed with this place. Last night they lost a loyal customer with their bad customer service! Too bad - I had been spreading the good word to my friends on behalf of Mangal, but I now retract my support! I've been ordering delivery like a crazed and loyal customer for about two months now (ordering about once a week on average), but their customer service STINKS as of late! Last night I had a particularly nasty experience: Friends from out of town were staying w/me, and I'd raved to them about Mangal's chicken kebab sandwich on "home bread" and baba ghanoush. One of my friends is a big fan of chicken sandwiches - keep this in mind. I ordered delivery yesterday evening before they left Queens for Philly. Not only was my order WRONG (chicken kebab plates instead of sandwiches plus the LARGE $8 baba ghanoush when I wanted the small for $4.50), but the guy on the phone AND the manager refused to rectify the situation and were totally rude about it. ("It's the same price so what's the problem?" was the response to the sandwich mistake.) They didn't acknowledge their mistake or apologize, preferring to instead argue and haggle about why they shouldn't bother to fix the situation. Since this wasn't the first time my order was wrong, this was really irritating and just plain bad form. I let it slide last time, but this time I ordered chicken sandwiches for a reason (for my visiting friend who loved chicken sands & was leaving within the hour), and the way that they handled the matter was not cool. For the record, the guy who *used to* answer the phone was very nice and polite, and when they messed up my order a few weeks back, he was apologetic and promised to "make it up" next time. Yesterday's guy was unfortunately not the same person - very curt and rude. I'll be trying Turkish Grill from now on, which is a shame because I really loved Mangal & it's closer to my apt...Mangal just didn't love me (or my business) back! ;) Ha. Mangal should treat its loyal customers with a little more respect!

I'm writing this review as I'm chewing a dry piece of chicken that I've been trying to swallow for the past 5 minutes. I've had food from this place before and was orgasmic. But today, I must say, the food was disappointing. I order the mix chicken kebab and lamb gyro plater and a mix lamb adana and lamb kebab plater, and everything was really dry and some things were salty when others under-seasoned. Not to mention, the delivery took 1hr. I'm not gonna say this is the last time I order from Mangal. But, if next time I get something like a did today, then I'll just say bye bye and forget about this place.

Suitable for vegans (: I had the tabule as appetizer. Eggplant salad for the main course. Absolutely love the bread, had to get seconds! Tried some turkish coffee black and it was a bit strong but good at the end of my meal.

It's average Turkish food, but it comes with amazing service. I spent more time talking about the waiter's hot Colombian girlfriend, than I did digging into the mixed grill plate. To start off, I had the Hummus (had better) with the homemade bread(mediocre). Then came the mixed grill(decent) which included chicken kabab, doner kabob(lamb gyro), and lamb kabab with Turkish rice and salad. The meat was actually well grilled, however lacking an umph to it in terms of spices and flavoring. The "Turkish" style hot sauce was alright, but the white sauce was pretty good. The Turkish version of sprite (gadagog ulzek) was actually good and refreshing. The highlight of the evening was the Turkish coffee and the baklava. Both were amazing and left my taste buds begging for more. Service was great, but the food leaves you desiring more. The decor is simple for the most part with Turkish music videos being played on the big screen TV. Despite the friendly service, I would only recommend this place as an after club spot to eat or "I'm a lazy shit who doesn't want to cook today and this is the only place open" in these sort of circumstances. Otherwise, I would hold off because there's better Turkish places in the city. Bon Appetit!!

I'm definately no Turkish food expert, but Mangal is pretty darn good. I do like their Gyro's very much, and the home bread is flippin awesome. The falafal is pretty sweet too. If you live in Sunnyside, you owe it to yourself to at least try this place. Ps- I afree with eric c. Decent pizzage too. Oh- and as of late 2008 they added a new restaurant part next door which is nice enough to sit in with waiter service.

This place made moving back to Queens worthwhile. I lived on these falafel sandwiches (always on home bread! So much more special than the pita) when I lived here in grad school. I have since been to Istanbul, and you know what? Mangal Kebab on Queens Boulevard is some of the best. They have a lot of seating now in their new location, so worth the trip. The baklava is also some of the best I've had outside Turkey.

Reducing one star cos of the waiter. Food was great and economical too. It's a small restaurant. We went there 3 days after Hurricane Sandy on Halloween's day. The place was busy with people placing a lot of to-go orders. When you step into the restaurant, you will see about 7-8 tables on the right side. Towards the left is the cashier and the place where they make all the Turkish delicacies. Keep in mind, the ambiance is so-so. My wife and I stepped in and saw a bunch of people sitting on the tables. The Waiter was not to be seen. Towards the left was bunch of people ordering food. Since the waiter wasn't available, I stepped towards the left and asked the cashier about the dishes shown in the picture on the wall, and finally decided to go with Lamb & Chicken Gyro; Chicken Kebab and Hummus. The cashier for some reason thought that mine was a to-go order. I paid cash and looked at the bill to find that it was a to-go and said that it was for here. He said he will change it . We found a table on the right. The table was not cleaned up and had left over food from before. By that time, the waiter somehow showed up from nowhere. We asked him to clean the place. He went ahead and cleaned it up and then he found that we had already placed the order with the cashier and paid the bill. His face changed immediately and was not happy with what I said. I guess he thought he would not get a tip. Anyhow, we got seated. He didn't ask on the type of drink that we wanted. I asked him water and he got it for is. The food came within 5 minutes. The waiter didn't offer for a dressing that goes with the gyro (which i found only when i finished from a couple sitting in the next table)., So the gyro was a lil dry for me. I would still give it a high rating. The hummus and the home made bread was tasty. My wife loved the Chicken kebab & rice as well. After having the food, the waiter stopped by to ask if we need dessert and we said yes and his face brightened up. We ordered baklava and that was tasty too. The price was great too, very economical in NY and compared to the pricey restaurants. Our bill came to 25 $. Chicken kebab & rice - 8.5 Lamb and Chicken gyro with home made bread - 8.5 Hummus - 4 Backlava - 4 I also found that there is only one waiter. i also found him to clear the left over food from the table and soon going and getting the food from the kitchen, which is not hygienic. I guess this maybe the same story with all waiters, I hope not!!

I ordered the mix grill and my wife ordered a gyro on home made bread. My mix grill comes with bread too and I must say the home made bread is really good. My wife barely touched her gyro and the both of us got full on my food alone. I liked all the kebabs we got. There is no atmosphere whatsoever in this place but I highly recommend it if you are in the mood for a quick and inexpensive meal.

Love this place! I would stop by here after some classes at the local Y to pick up a falael sandwich on homemade bread. But really, every thing is excellent, from the chicken soup, to the babaganoush, to the eggplant salad. I've been to numerous other Turkish places more highly "rated" by Zagats and New York Magazine and other so called food reviewers, but this place is better than all of them. AND most AWESOME of all: THEY DELIVER TO WOODSIDE!!

quality halal turkish food. friendly staff. i've had their lamb and chicken adana kebab (awesome) with rice pilaf (toasted to perfection). their lamb stew was decent, too. but the beef tripe soup left something to be desired (i'm used to south asian style preparation of beef tripe, fried with lots of spices, so this was a bit raw for me). i wish they had a tikka kebab of sorts, as i generally prefer those to the ground meat kebabs. though that wouldn't keep me away for long!

I'm a huge fan of this place, and luckily I haven't had any bad experiences; I'm actually a little surprised about that since I always get the chicken adana sandwich. Never had the pizza (everyone says its lousy -- but that doesn't make it any different from any other pizza place in Sunnyside), but I imagine the turkish pizza (lamachun) is good. The shepherd's salad is always fresh. The bread (they call it "home bread") here is fantastic. Sometimes I go in to buy a loaf or half a loaf to have at home with hummus or tzatziki. They make it constantly so it's usually quite fresh (and you can reheat it in a toaster the next day). If you get a sandwich here, pay the extra and GET THE HOME BREAD. I don't know where they get their baklava, but it's very good. The guy who owns the place is sort of gruff and friendly at the same time. I think it's just his way. Oh, and they recently expanded and opened a sit-down place next door, so I guess business is going well.

Usually I would rate this place higher, but unfortunately I feel like it lost its charm after being reviewed by the local media. Or perhaps it was when they expanded and opened up the sit down section. When I used to go in before I knew what to expect and how to feel. Now, its a bit jarring. It's caught between being a hole in the wall place and being a nice sit down place with table service. The food itself is still pretty fantastic, and the portions are quite satisfying. In another review I've expressed my love of lamb, and Mangal's lamb offerings are delectable. I waffle between the Adana Kabob or the Donner, and you must get it served on their homemade bread. One of my favorite soups would probably be ezogelin, and their version always satisfys, a squirt of tart fresh lemon juice and a few dashes of the sweet mild chili flakes, toasted homemade bread and you've got yourself a meal. Unless you're like me and need that to accompany some lamb. The place still does have a neighborhood feel to it, with many of the local Turkish population catching a Fenerbache match. I just can't get over wondering if I should wait to be served or go order up at the counter. Do I tip the guy that takes my order, or do I just let it pass?

I was super impressed with the awesome foods at this spot, in my soon to be hood! I had gyro, my mama had adana kebab. We went for small portions, which were enormous anyway, as well as an order of cacik (yogurt dipping sauce basically). Everything was delicious, and super cheap! Always a plus, especially if you're cash only!

Good Turkish take-out, but prices are a little steep for the quality. If you're willing to spend even more though, the Turkish Grill a few blocks away is a much better bet. Read more about my experience at Mangal Kabob here: sunnysidefood.wordpress.…

The food at Mangal is really good, the prices are low, and the service is friendly. The take-out counter in front is frenetic, but if you sit down, be prepared to wait a while, because the pace in the small dining room is slow. Turkish TV is always blaring, all the workers are male, and I think they treat their female customers best. After handing me my order, the head guy always says "see you tomorrow," and it's not so much a statement of fact as an expression of hope. I rarely go in two days in a row. Once I forgot my sunglasses on a table and they kept them for me for a week. The homemade bread, baked in enormous flat ovals behind the counter, is simple and excellent. I have stopped in several times just to buy bread, and sometimes they give it to me for free (it costs maybe $2). Things I like to eat here: shepherd's salad or tabbouleh salad (about $5), falafel sandwich ($6), baba ganoush - all vegetarian, but friends I have brought here like the lamb. I have never tried the pizza. Don't mess around with the other Turkish restaurant in the neighborhood - the value and vibe at Mangal are far superior!

  • Jen M.

Wow. Best baba ganush ever, humus and tabule are very good as well. The lentil soup is very homey and comforting with just a hint of spice. The shish kebab and gyro combo plate is well seasoned and perfectly grilled, all served with amazing bread (ask for extra, you'll be glad you did). A Turkish friend was not impressed with the lahmacun, but I loved it. Is a bit thicker than he likes, but if you've never tried it, you'll have nothing to complain about as it's pretty darn tasty. Highly, highly recommend it all.

I've been to Mangal Kabob several times, and each visit feels like a different restaurant depending on how I go about getting food: * Take out: The chef behind the counter is seriously lacking in bedside manner and almost gives off a "no-soup-for-you" vibe. Don't let it scare you--he, like you, cares only about the food. Enjoy the Turkish television while you wait. * Dine-in: The dining room is a little drab, yes, but the wait service is quick and friendly. * Delivery: I found their delivery service was incredibly slow, and when the food finally arrived, it was cold and my soda had somehow leaked all over that heavenly home bread. It caused a serious rift in my relationship with the restaurant, but we've since patched things up. Luckily, the most consistent thing about Mangal is also the most important: the food. The meat is always bursting with flavor, and the meals are incredibly filling for the price. I go with the chicken or beef kabobs, but the gyro and falafel are awesome too. Don't forget the baklava.

This is one of my favorite Sunnyside haunts. Excellent fast Turkish food in a small, no frills location. Whether you are in the mood for felafel, chicken kabab, shwarma, Adama, whatever, the place does it well with large portions and excellent prices. As evidence of their excellent food, the place is always about 90% filled with neighborhood Turks and the large flat-screen television is always playing Turkish soccer, news, or soap operas. I would advise being liberal in choosing dishes here as they are all good. Pay the extra money and get whatever pita sandwich you want on Turkish homebread. Try all the excellent deserts. Also, take advantage of the opportunity to try Turkish soda or Ayran--yogurt drink. I wouldn't go for the pizza. I mean, even if it looked good (it doesn't) why would you go to a Turkish joint for pizza?

I really enjoyed my lunch here. The person who answered the phone was cheerful and efficient. I ordered a falafel sandwich on a pita with a side of tabboule salad, and everything was delicious. The falafel sandwich was huge and filling, the hummus was creamy and delicious, and it was definitely some bangin' falafel. The tabboule salad was fresh and delicious and came with a lemon wedge to finish off with fresh lemon juice. It was a great mix of parsely, scallions, bulgar wheat, really fresh tomatoes and lemon. All in all, delicious, satisfying lunch that only took half an hour to deliver!

This just might be my new favority place. I'd go there just for the bread! We had the appetizer sampler. Everything was tasty and fresh. The kids each had sandwiches (one lamb and one chicken). They each could only eat half! My husband had the mixed grill which was a heaping plate of lamb and chicken in various forms. I had the mixed adana kebabs which were moist and flavorful. The prices were very reasonable and the service was polite. They don't serve alcohol but were kind enough to allow us to bring our own wine.

This place is SO freakin' Turkish... From the tacky furniture, to LiGTV on two walls (lest you miss a goal) transmitting Turkish league soccer, down the heavy Russian-style makeup on the waitress. Which is why I love it! It reminds me of the pide joints I was addicted to in Sultanahmet. They don't have as bedazzling an array of pide as those places, but the selection is respectable. The service is slow but that is because they are making your pide from scratch. The pide itself is good enough. They are well made but I'm not sure if they are using kasir cheese. (They also serve pizza so they might be double dipping). That is the only reason I gave it 3 stars (no 3 1/2 available on yelp). If you want kabab or good meze, go to Manhattan and spend some money, you cheapo! This place is strictly for your pide/lahmacun fix and it delivers on that end! I realize the irony of that last sentence and the place's name, but they had to name it something, right? Do Americans know what the hell pide is? Well there you go. They also give food to fast-breakers on Ramazan which is nice. They made my list! ;)

I ran the three and half miles or so to Sunnyside on a quest for an awesome doner kabab. I have had excellent doner kababs in Europe, but haven't found one yet in New York. This one was good, but not quite what I was looking for. It's heavy on the lettuce and tomato, and just came across a little blander than what I was looking for. I'd definitely have it again, but wouldn't go out of my way for it.

  • eric c.

Yes, this is great spot for Turkish food. But I'm submitting a review of Mangal Kabab's pizza, which is taking an unfair beating here by people who sound like they've never even tried it. Sunnyside is strangely afflicted by a plague of bad pizza places. I don't get it, but there's a lot about Sunnyside that's extremely curious. Do yourself a favor, and the next time you need a local pizza fix, get a slice at Mangal: the tomato sauce is good (for a place that doesn't specialize in Italian food), the cheese is fresh, and the crust is thick and soft. This may not be the way everyone likes their pizza, but like everyone here knows, in Sunnyside, you take what you can get.

Queens is a great borough. People love Brooklyn (for whatever reason), but Queens is the place that I call home. Not only is it a nice place to live, the food is great! I found myself in Sunnyside a while ago, wondering where to go to eat. My friend Sam (who used to live in Sunnyside, but defected to trendy Williamsburg, due to rent issues) who was with me asked me if I liked falafel. Why not, I figured, and so we went down Queens Blvd. It doesn't look like much, but the falafel sandwich with home bread? Amazing. What is home bread, you may ask? I don't really know, but I know it's warm and fluffy and delicious. I got it with everything, which included lettuce and tomatoes and some sort of yummy sauce. Check it out if you're ever in Sunnyside!

I like getting an order to go here. All the kebobs are good, doner a little salty, not the best, but good. Very good eggplant salad, best desserts. Usually a hangout for neighborhood Turks watching soccer on the big screen TV in the back. I don't like sitting there, but I do like the food, so I get it to go.

Every now and then, I like to stop here to pick up dinner before heading home. My favorite thing to order is their lamb gyro in a pita, but i also like to get the gyro plate, which is pretty much the gyro over the rice and you get some bread with it. I also like their falafel sandwich a lot. And the best part-- none of this stuff is expensive and it's very filling. Looking at their take-out menu, I think I'd want to order their kiymali pide, which is described as "a thick dough stuffed with ground lamb and seasonings." Sounds good.

Nothing fancy, no tablecloths, Turkish sports on the tube, you have to ask twice for water, non-Turks may get less enthusiastic service, but... excellent, filling food. For two, the babaganush, bread, falafel plate, and two fresh lahmacun clocks in at $20, with tip.

I'm not a regular at this small Turkish joint so my views on based on a first time experience. I was starved and this place actually hit the spot. We ordered the lamb Adama plate (small) and couldn't believe how fresh it tasted! (straight off the grill) It was real good. The Tabule wasn't as a desirable dish as I had anticipated, it was so bland. We were fortunate enough to be eating there when they were slicing up their meat. From the look of the quality of meat they were using, I couldn't see this place ever doing "wrong". Try it...it's good food at good prices!!!!

  • Linda B.

I just don't think the food here stands up against Turkish Grill, where you can have a sit down meal, or get take out or delivery. Plus, the prices are way too much for a takeaway counter joint. I walked into Mangal one evening, around 10:30pm, felt disoriented and instantly uncomfortable. The display case didn't have anything labeled, although I knew some things by sight. What made me so uncomfortable was the three or four men sitting down and eating at one of the (maybe 3) tables in the place. While I awaited my order, I felt gawked at more than I have any other place. Really creepy. I won't return unless I have a guy with me. I've NEVER felt this in any Middle Eastern establishment anywhere, and I have been to kabob shops around the world. So sad that this is the experience in the neighborhood I call home!

Good, fairly cheap Turkish food. The red lentil soup was pretty good. I enjoy grilled meats - so suffice it to say that I like their kebabs (I've only had the chicken). Their pitas are good too - I've had it twice, once with lamb, and another time with falafel. They have a dessert that sort of looks like flan - a tad sweet, but really good.
